Identity-Verified Delivery: When & Why You Need It

What Is Identity-Verified Delivery?

Identity-verified delivery is exactly what it sounds like: the driver checks the recipient's government-issued photo ID to confirm their name matches the name on the shipment before releasing the package. It's not about age — it's about making sure the right person receives the delivery.

The driver compares the name on the recipient's ID (driver's licence, passport, or other government-issued photo ID) with the name provided by the sender. If the names don't match, or the recipient can't produce valid ID, the package is not delivered.

When Do You Need Identity-Verified Delivery?

Identity verification is critical in situations where the contents are sensitive, valuable, or legally restricted to a specific individual:

Legal Documents

Contracts, court filings, notarized documents, and other legal paperwork often need to reach a specific person — not just anyone at the address. Identity verification creates a chain of custody that holds up in legal proceedings.

High-Value Items

Jewelry, electronics, luxury goods, and other high-value shipments carry significant fraud and theft risk. Verifying the recipient's identity ensures the item reaches the intended buyer, not a porch pirate or an unauthorized household member.

Sensitive Medical Supplies

Prescription medications, medical devices, and other health-related items may need to be delivered to the patient specifically. Identity verification ensures compliance with privacy regulations and prevents misdelivery of controlled substances.

Regulated Products

Some regulated items require the named purchaser to receive the delivery personally. This goes beyond age verification — the seller needs to confirm that the person who bought the product is the person receiving it.

Financial Documents

Bank cards, cheques, tax documents, and other financial materials are high targets for identity theft. Verified delivery adds a critical layer of security.

How Is It Different from Age-Verified Delivery?

The two services are related but serve different purposes:

  • Age-verified delivery — the driver checks ID to confirm the recipient is 19 years of age or older. The name doesn't matter — any adult at the address can accept the package. This is used for alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco.
  • Identity-verified delivery — the driver checks ID to confirm the recipient's name matches the name on the shipment. Age may or may not be relevant — the point is that a specific person receives the package.

You can also combine both: identity and age verification on the same delivery, ensuring the right person receives the package and they're of legal age.

How Weels Handles Identity Verification

When you flag a shipment as identity-verified, here's what happens:

  • Driver arrives and asks for government-issued photo ID
  • Name comparison — the driver's app compares the name on the ID with the recipient name on the shipment
  • Verification logged — the result is timestamped and stored in your delivery record
  • Photo proof of delivery — a timestamped photo confirms the handoff
  • Failed verification — if the name doesn't match or no ID is presented, the package is returned to you
