What to Expect When Your Delivery Requires ID Verification

Why Does My Delivery Require ID?

If you've ordered a product that's age-restricted under Ontario law, the delivery driver is legally required to verify your identity before handing over the package. This applies to:

The legal drinking and purchasing age in Ontario is 19 years old. This isn't a Weels policy — it's Ontario law, and our drivers are trained to follow it on every delivery.

What ID Is Accepted?

Our drivers accept the following forms of valid, government-issued photo ID:

  • Ontario driver's licence — the most common form of ID
  • Canadian passport — valid and not expired
  • Ontario Photo Card — issued by the Ontario government for non-drivers
  • BYID card — the Bring Your ID card issued by the LCBO and AGCO
  • Permanent resident card — with photo
  • Canadian citizenship card — with photo

The ID must include your photo, date of birth, and not be expired. Expired documents, health cards, student IDs, and digital IDs on your phone are not accepted.

What Happens During the ID Check?

Here's what to expect when the driver arrives:

  • The driver will knock or ring and let you know they have an age-restricted delivery
  • They'll ask to see your government-issued photo ID
  • They'll verify your date of birth confirms you're 19 or older
  • Once confirmed, they'll hand you the package and complete the delivery

The whole process takes about 30 seconds. The driver logs the verification in the Weels app — your ID details are not photographed or stored.

What If I Don't Have Valid ID?

If you can't present valid ID at the door, the driver cannot release the package. Here's what happens:

  • The delivery is marked as Failed — ID verification unsuccessful
  • The package is returned to the Weels depot at the end of the driver's route
  • The merchant is notified and can arrange a reattempt

The driver cannot make exceptions, leave the package without verification, or accept alternate forms of ID. This protects you, the merchant, and keeps the delivery compliant with Ontario law.

Can Someone Else Accept the Delivery?

Yes — any person at the delivery address can accept an age-restricted package, as long as they are 19 or older and can present valid photo ID. It doesn't need to be the person who placed the order.

Tips for a Smooth ID-Verified Delivery

  • Have your ID ready — keep it near the door so you don't have to search for it
  • Be home during the delivery window — use real-time tracking to know exactly when the driver is arriving
  • Make sure someone 19+ is available — if you won't be home, arrange for another adult to accept the package
  • Check your ID isn't expired — drivers cannot accept expired identification
